● This will be the second time that New Zealand and Afghanistan are playing each other in men’s T20Is with the first such instance being in the previous edition of the men’s World Cup where the Black Caps defeated the Afghans by eight wickets.
● New Zealand have won 13 games since the beginning of 2022 in the men’s T20I format (also in 2021), a win against Afghanistan will make this their most successful year in the history of the format.
● This will be the first time that New Zealand will play multiple men’s T20Is in Australia in a single year; they have never won two T20I games on the bounce Down under.
● Afghanistan have lost each of their last four men’s T20I games on the trot, with the first three coming in the Asia Cup; they have never lost five or more such games in succession in a 5+ team tournament.
● Afghanistan have a catch success rate of 57% in the ongoing men’s T20 World Cup having caught four of their seven chances in the tournament, this happens to be the lowest such rate for any team in this edition of the competition.
● New Zealand have a dot ball rate of 32% while batting in the men’s T20I format since the beginning of 2022, the best such rate of all teams participating in this edition of the men’s T20 World Cup.
● New Zealand batters have a false shot rate of 28% since the beginning of 2022 in men’s T20I cricket, the best of all teams participating in this edition of the T20 World Cup; Afghanistan are 10th in this list.
● Hazratullah Zazai (967) is 33 away from becoming the sixth Afghanistan batter to reach to 1000 runs in men’s T20I format; if he does achieve the feat in the next innings (35th), he will become the fastest Afghan batter to reach to the landmark leapfrogging Mohammad Shahzad who achieved the feat in his 38th innings.
● New Zealand pair Ishan Sodhi and Tim Southee have combined for 10 dismissals with Sodhi as bowler and Southee as fielder in men's T20Is; in the format's history, only three bowler/fielder dous have registered more dismissals: Dwayne Bravo/Lendl Simmons, Shakib Al Hasan/Mahmudullah, and Mark Adair/Andy Balbirnie (all 11).
● Tim Southee (New Zealand) has scalped 25 wickets in the men’s T20 World Cup, the most for a Kiwi bowler; in fact, he is the format’s leading wicket-taker with 125 scalps to his name - two more than the next bowler in the list.
