Aneurin Donald is a talented Welsh right-handed batter who has built a reputation for his aggressive approach and ability to change the momentum of an innings. Born in Swansea on December 20, 1996, Donald came through the Glamorgan system and emerged as one of the most exciting young batters in county cricket during the early stages of his career. He is also a right-arm off-break bowler and has been used as a wicketkeeper at different points in his career.
Donald made his first-class debut for Glamorgan against Hampshire in 2014, aged just 17, before making his List A debut against Nottinghamshire in 2015. His early promise was evident almost immediately, but it was his remarkable 234 against Derbyshire at Colwyn Bay in 2016 that truly announced him as a player of significant potential. The innings came from just 136 balls and included a series of audacious strokes, with Donald reaching his century, 150 and double century with sixes. He reached 200 from only 123 deliveries, equalling the record at the time for the fastest double century in first-class cricket.
That spectacular knock was part of a breakthrough season in which Donald also scored 115 against Cardiff MCCU and finished the summer with more than 1,000 first-class runs. His aggressive batting style made him an exciting prospect, while his performances for England's age-group sides earned him further recognition. Donald was part of England Under-19s and was selected for the squad at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup, although his progression to the senior international side never materialised.
After several seasons with Glamorgan, Donald moved to Hampshire, initially joining on loan in 2018 before becoming a permanent member of the squad. He enjoyed an encouraging 2019 County Championship campaign, scoring 554 runs at an average of 39.57. One of the highlights came against Warwickshire, when he produced a counter-attacking 173 from 144 balls after previously making 75 from 56 deliveries against the same opposition. Donald has also featured in The Hundred, representing Birmingham Phoenix before later joining Trent Rockets, adding another chapter to his experience in domestic short-form cricket.
However, Donald's career was subsequently disrupted by injuries, most notably an anterior cruciate ligament injury that ruled him out for much of the 2020 season. He returned to contribute to Hampshire's successful T20 campaign in 2022, when the county won the T20 Blast, before spending the 2023 season on loan at Derbyshire. His move to Derbyshire was later made permanent, and he enjoyed a spectacular 2025 T20 Blast campaign, finishing with 449 runs at a strike rate of 216.90, the highest among all batters in the competition, while his 30 sixes were also the most in the tournament. He also equalled the UK record for the fastest T20 fifty, reaching the landmark in just 13 balls against Yorkshire, further underlining his credentials as one of the competition's most explosive batters.
A naturally attacking batter who is comfortable taking the initiative, Donald's career has been shaped by flashes of outstanding ability alongside periods affected by injuries and inconsistency. His explosive 234 remains the defining innings of his early career, while his experience across county cricket and domestic T20 competitions has added greater depth to his game. His outstanding 2025 T20 Blast campaign further demonstrated the destructive potential he possesses with the bat, and with his ability to score quickly and put pressure on bowling attacks, Donald remains a player capable of making a significant impact when he finds his rhythm.
